From Coconut to Shushu
The outer shell of the coconut is removed by wedging pointed piece of iron in to it.
Once the considerable number of shellshas been accumulated, the local women take them to the beach where they bury them in a hole in the sand about 1m3 deep.
The spot is marked by a cloth, so they are able to find its location again.
The Shells remain in the sand about one year, during which the sea will have softened the shells.
They are dug out and are immediately battered with wooden poles that have a piece of leather fixed on it.
By doing so the fibers split and are turned into wool. The wool is taken home and twisted with their hands to coconut strings.
The local young women then work this strings to Shushus which wonderful and ecological alternative to washing up sponges are.
Many women in Zanzibar earn their living by growing and harvesting sea grass. Therefore it is necessary to be able to swim. To ensure the livelihood of these women and families we are looking for supporters for our project SEP Swim Education Program.
